What is a Commercial Pilot Certificate?

A Commercial Pilot Certificate is an advanced certification that allows pilots to be compensated for their flying services, opening the door to careers in aviation such as charter flying, aerial photography, agricultural operations, or eventually airline piloting. This rating signifies a higher level of skill, knowledge, and professionalism, as pilots must demonstrate precise aircraft handling, advanced maneuvers, and a deep understanding of aeronautical principles. A commercial pilot can carry passengers or cargo for hire under specific Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. The benefits of a commercial pilot rating include the ability to earn income as a pilot, access to more advanced aviation career opportunities, and the development of refined piloting skills that enhance safety and confidence in the cockpit.

Time Requirements

The hour requirements for training to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate are specified within the 250 total flight hours.

  1. To complete the rating, a minimum requirement of 20 hours of training with an instructor, which must cover:

    • 10 hours of instrument training (can be in an actual aircraft or simulator).

    • 10 hours in a complex or technically advanced aircraft (TAA), such as one with retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propeller, or an advanced glass cockpit system.

    • Night training, including a 5-hour night VFR cross-country flight with at least 10 takeoffs and landings at a towered airport.

  2. Solo training or pilot-in-command (PIC) requirements, which must include:

    • A 300-nautical-mile cross-country flight with landings at three points and one leg at least 250 nautical miles straight-line distance.

    • 5 hours of solo flight in night VFR conditions or 10 takeoffs and landings as PIC during night hours.

These training hours focus on preparing the pilot for the advanced maneuvers, navigation, and decision-making skills required for a commercial pilot certificate. This is normally one of the more difficult parts of a student's training, so we estimate a total of 30 hours to complete the certificate rather than the minimum 20.

Age Requirements

To obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate, a candidate must be at least 18 years old. This is the minimum age requirement set by the FAA for individuals seeking to be compensated for flying services.

Medical Requirements

To obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate, the applicant must hold at least a second-class medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). A second-class medical certificate ensures that the pilot meets the physical and mental fitness standards necessary to operate an aircraft safely in a commercial capacity.

Testing Requirements

To earn a Commercial Pilot Certificate, you must pass two key tests: a written knowledge test and a practical test. The written test covers aviation topics like regulations, navigation, and weather, and must be completed before the practical test. The practical test, often called a check-ride, includes an oral exam and a flight evaluation with an FAA examiner to demonstrate your knowledge and piloting skills.

Lesson Structure and Materials

Chester County Aviation prepares you for your Commercial Pilot Certificate using a structured, web-based course developed by King Schools in conjunction with the Cessna Aircraft Company. Our instructors teach within the framework of this structured program and guide you through the requirements for your certificate. The majority of your ground training is delivered through this program, complemented by instructor-led pre- and post-flight discussions tailored to your training needs. The WBI kit includes course access, a pilot logbook, a flight computer, and an aircraft manual, providing everything needed for progress toward your Commercial Pilot Certificate. We also offer a variety of charts, books, and other pilot supplies to supplement the kit and support you throughout your training journey.
